BANK WITH CITY HALL

by Craig Altschul

Some Rutland area taxpayers are letting City Hall pay their quarterly property tax bill…in a manner of speaking. The new automatic bill system is particularly appealing to busy people who just plain forget (or so they claim) to pay their tax bill, said the Rutland Herald. So far only 180 households since 2004 have taken the city up on its direct debit process. You can’t actually pay online, but give the city your bank account information and the city will pay your bill for you. The program is gaining in popularity. The city wins by keeping costs down; the taxpayer wins by paying their bill on time and avoiding penalty fees for late payment. See, government really does try to cut red tape.
