KIDS CAFE OFFERS GOOD FOOD, GOOD TIMES

by Craig Altschul

Barre has a new cafe on the town scene. It’s just for kids, though. An average of 30 kids have been eating here every Tuesday evening since last fall, said the Rutland Herald.Typical offerings include hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, pizza, and spaghetti. Kids can have seconds and thirds or more – until the food runs out. It was opened in conjunction with the Vermont Foodbank and the Barre Salvation Army. This cafe is one of eight that has opened statewide in response to ensuring low income kids have at least one nutritious meal a week. Whatever the reason for starting the cafe, the kids are appreciative: “We usually come here every Tuesday,” said Cyla Gauthier, 8, of Barre City. “I pretty much wish it was everyday…we eat supper here and we sing. We pray for our food and stuff.” Cyla began the meal last week by saying, “Dear God, thank you for this day, and I hope the food is good.”
