PRESERVING VERMONT HISTORY MAKES FOR A WINNER

by Craig Altschul

Let’s hope history repeats itself. The Vermont Historical Society recently was awarded the 2007 National Medal for Museum and Library Society, one of only five institutions in the country to be accorded this national recognition. While the society only has two physical locations – a museum in Montpelier and the History Center in Barre – Director of Development Jane Campbell feels the recognition was more because "of a lot of work we’ve done in bringing Vermont history and heritage to everybody" than their actual museum sites. Some of their programs include the Vermont History Exp held annually in Tunbridge, launching a Web site (www.vermonthistory.org), and encouraging partnerships with local schools in 197 towns. The award carries a monetary value, as well as the recognition, in the form of a $10,000 check. Congratulations to everyone who works so hard at preserving Vermont’s memories.
