Question: Hello, I am trying to search for a bed & breakfast that I heard about on a TV show. The place I am looking for use to be a mansion owned by the Vanderbilt family, it has now been turned into a bed & breakfast in your state, I am sorry I do not know the name of the house or city it is in. I would love to find out more about it if you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I am planning a trip to the east coast this fall and would love to know more.
Answer: When we first received this question, it had us stumped! We asked for help to find the answer to this mystery trivia question and we received several responses.
So, what is the name for a Bed & Breakfast in Vermont that used to be a mansion owned by the Vanderbilt Family? The closest we’ve found to be true is the Inn at Shelburne Farms.
Shelburne Farms was created in 1886 by William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb as a model agricultural estate. In 1972, it was founded as an educational nonprofit. The nearly 400 acres of sustainably managed woodlands received Green Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council in 1998 and the grass-based dairy supports a herd of 125 purebred, registered Brown Swiss cows, whose milk is made into the Farm’s award-winning cheddar cheese right on the property.
Restored in 1987, the Inn today retains its historic character and continues the tradition of warmth, informal elegance and hospitality enjoyed by guests for more than a century. There are 24 bedrooms & two cottages individually decorated with many original furnishings. At the restaurant, you can enjoy contemporary regional cuisine for breakfast, dinner or Sunday brunch with reservations.
