THE SUN SETS AT THE DRIVE-IN

by Craig Altschul

It must be summertime in Colchester. The Sunset Drive-In has opened its parking lot to the many devotees – and newbies – who have been coming to see the latest flicks of the day offered by the drive-in since 1948. It’s one of the oldest continuously operated drive-ins in New England, says the Burlingon Free Press. Some espouse the right way to view the double-feature shows shown on four screens: position your car (rear faces the screen angled on a stratagically placed mass of earth), bring along a good supply of Windex, and pack the mosquito net. Some just opt for a frisbee toss, and hanging out with their friends. Some go for sitting on the lawn chairs or blanket and watching the flicks. “We don’t even care what the movie is. We just like to come,” said long-time viewers Jim DuVal. Who are we to argue?
