West River Trail Run

by Linda Cassella

Runners and walkers dust off those sneakers and get ready for The West River Train Run that takes place on Saturday June 4th,  2016.  Choose from the 11 mile individual run, 3 leg relay or the 5K Run/Walk.

The Collaborative of Londonderry, VT hosts this annual event with all proceeds going to help provide fun and healthy educational programs  for youth throughout the Northshire and Mountain communities of Southern Vermont.

mapGet ready for 11 miles of trouble as you start off at Londonderry Depot in South Londonderry and end up in  Jamaica State Park in Jamaica, VT.  Section one of the run starts off with 4 miles of flat terrain that provides a gentle grade and easy travel.  The trail takes you through Winhall Campground and over a single lane bridge across the Winhalll River.  Section 2 begins with an uphill, switchback single trail.  The trail continues along the river’s edge and then becomes a single footpath through the forest with several uphill jaunts and stream crossings.  This is to be considered the most challenging of the trail.  Finally, Section 3  starts off with a gradual and flat trail.  You will begin the switchback trail as you make your way across the steep face of Ball Mountain Dam before you follow the river downstream and cross the Cobb Bridge into Jamaica State Park.

Don’t feel like going 11 miles?   New to the event this year is the 5K Run/Walk at Jamaica State Park. Participants get free entry into the park.  There will be giveaways, music, raffles and food.
