WHEELIES OF A DIFFERENT KIND ENJOYED

by Craig Altschul

Unicycles are back – well, at least in Montpelier. The Montpelier Unicyclists, a loosely formed group of about 30 adults and kids, meet Sunday afternoons to practice their skills. They get together to play dodgeball or shoot some hoops or just roll around, said the Times Argus. It takes some time and practice to get used to balancing on just one wheel. It can take even more time to learn how to “chair launch” which involves using two chairs as stabilizers while pedaling in both directions. “You can’t really teach someone, you can give them pointers,” said unicyclist Bill Merrylees. “It’s awkward to train your legs to turn a wheel in two directions.” Call Merryless at 802-223-3456 if you’re interested in wheeling on Sundays or unicyling in Montpelier. You, too, can have a wheel good time.
