WHEELING ONE’S WAY TO A BONUS

by Craig Altschul

Eric Albinson’s boss at Stark Mountain Woodworking offered him and other employees $1,000 just for riding to work. He only lives three miles from the shop. Oh, but there’s a catch, of course. Employees had to log 650 miles riding to work during 2006.

The concept was the idea of company co-owner Skimmer Hellier who hatched the plan one morning fresh from his bike ride to work, says The Burlington Free Press. The deal was $500 up front to buy a bike, and another $500 when they completed the 650 miles. The employees had to give back a buck for every mile they fell short. Eric figures he’ll hit the goal in December. Is it working? Yes, say the owners. Employees arrive fresh and ready to go. Hope there are no early snowdrifts.
