Zombies are in. Hit TV shows, best-selling video games, and blockbuster Hollywood movies all confirm it, Zombies are here to stay and we couldn’t be happier about it. One of our favorite additions to the smorgasbord of undead offerings and activities takes place right here in the good ol’ Green Mountain State – the 2nd Annual Zombie Run at The Champlain Valley Expo Center in Essex. Combining obstacle racing, a 5K, immersive role playing scenarios, and the rush of surviving the impending Zombocalypse, Zombie Run leaves you exhausted and begging for more.
With a rich back story adding drama to your zombie experience, you can participate as either a zombie or a runner (or both if you’re feeling conflicted about your current undead vs. alive status). As a zombie you will be decked out by a professional makeup department in all the blood, guts, and brains you can shake your undead fist at. You will then be placed on various sections of the course as waves of potential ‘survivors’ test their mettle and try to evade your brain sucking bite [Editors Note: you don’t really bite people, that’s just unsanitary – but you do try to grab their flags as they stampede by]. As a runner you and your crew will make the epic journey through fairgrounds buildings, over walls, under mud pits as you fight to survive (aka; finish with all your flags).
With plenty of places for spectators and supporters to cheer you on (or root for your Zombie induced demise) and tons of music, food, beer, and activities to keep them happy – Zombie Run is one of the best and most athletic ways we can think of to get into the Halloween spirit.
Best of all, it’s for a great cause. In 2013, Zombie Run LLC has set a goal of raising enough money to provide 100 surgeries for cleft affected children through donations to Smile Train. They intend to also donate over $50,000 to local charities. Zombies, running, charity and community – it doesn’t get much better than that.
